The Fighting Sullivans from County Cork.

A recent trip along The Beara Peninsula in County Cork turned into a wonderful day of exploring many hidden places. One of those was a small pier at Trafrask near Adrigole.

I had been here before and is a magical place to visit. A small monument there remembers the lives of 5 Sullivan brother who died in WW2 onboard the USS Juneau when it was struck by the torpedo of a Japanese submarine. The bothers were descendants of emigrants from this area and in August USS The Sullivans was anchored in the bay for the offical ceremony to honour the lives of the 5 bothers.

The story of the Sullivans was made into a film in 1944 called The Fighting Sullivans.
